Pore size is genetically determined when we are born, yet every other day patients ask Dr. Ruth Treiber about ways to shrink their pores. Genetically those born with larger pores will always have large pores. Aesthetically, small pores give our faces a better appearance, providing us with smoother, and less irritable skin. One of the best ways to give your pores a smaller appearance is by unclogging them, as dirt and build-up causes pores to seem larger than they are. Dr. Ruth Treiber recommends a few easy tips on how to unclog your pores and give them that smaller, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

• Use a lactic acid-based toner or alpha-hydroxy-acid-based peel in order to lessen the amount of oil your pores produce. Pores that produce less oil not only appear smaller, but give you a clearer, smoother complexion.

• Use glycol acid products, salicylic acid, or certain retinoids to unclog your pores. Pores become enlarged due to the build up of dirt and dead skin cells, when they are clean they shrink.

• Exfoliate more, this cleans your pores, relieving them of build-up and causing them to shrink. You can use physical exfoliators such as a scrub or a facial brush. Or use retinoids or other acne solutions. Also makes your face smoother, and brighter, giving you a clearer aesthetically pleasing complexion overall.

• If you use make-up, Dr. Ruth Trieber recommends using a make-up primer before applying it. These fill up your pores and prevent make-up and other dirt from clogging your pores and causing them to enlarge.
