Important Tips Summer Skincare
With the warm summer months upon us, it’s important for dermatology patients to understand that their skincare needs in the summer are vastly different from their needs during the fall, winter, and even the spring! However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth! · Avoid Over-Tanning
An important thing for patients to understand is that there is technically no such thing as a ‘healthy tan’ – when our skin is being tanned, it is essentially being damaged. And while it may not hurt in the short term, constant tanning can cause numerous adverse effects for the health and appearance of your skin, including premature aging. Therefore, it is important to try and tan is little as possible, and limit your overall exposure to direct sunlight – especially in the summer.
· Apply Sunscreen Daily
This is a vital rule, no matter what type of skin you might have or how you feel your body may react to sunlight. It is vital to wear high-SPF sunscreen and apply approximately one ounce to your enrire body each day, about 2 to 3 times per day. Sunburn is still possible even on overcast days or days when the temperature drops lower than normal.
· Protective Clothing
Try to wear wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and clothing made out ofunbleached cotton. · Watch Out for Discolorations & Spots
Especially important during the summer, try to be aware of any spot discolorations along your body – as these areas can be exacerbated by direct sunlight and may be a sign of a more severe skin condition that needs to be checked out by a dermatologist.
