Glycolic acid peels, also known as fruit peels or alpha-hydroxy acid peels, give skin a smoother, younger-looking appearance. Glycolic acid peels (GAPs) are most effective when done as a series of 4-6 treatments about 3-4 weeks apart. They require a shorter recuperative period than is needed for other chemical peels. Other chemical peel options include the slightly stronger beta-hydroxy acid peel (salicylic acid), which is excellent for oily, acne-prone, or more photo-damaged skin. The stronger trichloracetic acid peels are infrequently used because of the longer downtime required for healing.
