Acne Scar Treatment

Acne is one of the most common issues amongst individuals in the world, regardless of age. Long thought to be exclusive to your teenage years, current research actually indicates that over 50% of the world’s adults are dealing with acne breakouts on quite a frequent basis. And even more alarming is that nearly 90% of those individuals will deal with some form of acne scarring over their lifetimes. While it happens different for everyone, it usually follows somewhat of a similar course. According to Dr. Eric Treiber MD of Treiber Dermatology, first comes the acne, and just when you think its beginning to heal on its own, you begin to see some redness and over time that red papule or raised acne bump is developing into a scar.

An acne scar develops from the body attempting to heal itself, after dealing with a bout of trauma – as a result of acne. Of course, certain external factors like picking or scraping definitely are working against you but for the most part when a pore becomes inflamed (because of clogging and bacteria) it causes the development of whiteheads and blackheads which are a form of acne lesion. According to Dr. Eric Treiber MD of Treiber Dermatology, over time the acne lesions will rupture and as the body tries to heal the rupture by producing mass amounts of collagen, acne scars develop because of collagen fibers. In addition, when there is too little collagen produced a scar will develop as well. However before seeking acne scar treatment Queens NY patients should know a bit more about how and why, they develop.

The first thing we have to understand is that there are many different forms of acne, and some are more prone to leaving scars than others. Common acne issues like whiteheads and blackheads rarely cause scarring, while more inflammatory acne, often known as cystic acne or acne nodules, are far more likely to cause scarring. Whiteheads and blackheads generally only reach the skin’s outer layer, while cystic acne tends to make it to the deeper layers. And because of this, they tend to have more of an effect on the layer known as the dermis. This inner layer of the skin can be thought of as the area in which the skin’s action takes place. As a result, when seeking acne scar treatment Queens NY experts will generally have to use methods that can penetrate deeper into the skin’s dermis. While these types of acne are quite common, a few things can definitely increase your chances of suffering from them. Genetics play a huge role, acne scars tend to run in the family – if you’re parents suffer from them, it is likely you will too. Another factor that can influence your acne scars is leaving your acne untreated. When left untreated, acne will almost always worsen before it improves on its own – if it even does. The best method to prevent acne scarring is to seek out early treatment for your acne. Also, it is important to avoid picking and overly touching your skin or pmples. This is tough as many aren’t even aware, they are picking at their faces.

Now that you are aware of why acne scars occur, let’s look at the best methods for acne scar treatment Queens NY medical spas are offering. Generally, there are 3 main method of treatment, chemical peels, laser treatments, and the use of injectable dermal fillers.

According to Dr. Eric Treiber MD of Treiber Dermatology, chemical peels offer some of the best results in treating acne scars. They are often acid-based solutions that are applied to the face topically, usually along the entire face. These peels are usually designed to chemically exfoliate the skin and remove the outer layer of the skin as well as stimulating collagen repair to replace the resurfaced skin. After a few chemical peels, the skin will usually repair itself and any surface acne scars will be either removed or far less visible. The second main means of acne scar treatment is the use of laser treatments. Laser skin resurfacing is another method to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin using high-end laser technology. They will generally heat the skin enough to remove the skin and repair the skin from the inner dermis. This will allow the skin to repair itself after only a few laser sessions over the course of a month or more. This is thought to be the most popular and most effective method. The third method is the use of dermal fillers. At Treiber Dermatology, in order to treat acne scars the team will use injectables based with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring acid molecule that acts as a means to moisturize and hydrate the skin. Dermal fillers like Juvéderm, or Restylane are injected into the skin, and over time will help to smooth the skin out and can fill the depressions left behind.
